Apart from Chabahar Port and oil purchase, India and Iran have partnership on many issues.
Despite all the pressure from America, India has maintained relations with Iran by adopting a policy of balance. Even after this, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei expressed concern about the condition of Muslims in India.
This was a shocking thing. That too when Muslims are facing severe atrocities in China’s Xinjiang province.
In his post, the Iranian leader commented on the situation of Muslims in India and appealed to Muslims for unity. Gaza was also mentioned by him in the same post.
The Indian Foreign Ministry has also given a sharp reply to his post. But the question still remains that why did the Supreme Leader of Iran make such a comment despite having a cordial relationship with India and no direct conflict.
Sandeep Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor at the School of International Studies in JNU, believes that the reason behind this is anger within Iran as to why India has improved its relations with Israel so much.
Iran feels that India’s policy is now becoming pro-Israel, whereas earlier there was a policy of balance in the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
Sandeep Singh says, ‘Iran’s relations with China and Russia have now improved. At the same time, its distance from the US and Israel camp has increased.
India’s stand on Ukraine is also different from Iran’s opinion. Iran has good relations with India. Recently, representatives from India also attended the swearing-in ceremony of their new President.
Even after this, Iran’s attitude is worrying. Such a statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader is a well thought out step. There is no mention of China in his post, whereas Muslims are facing a lot of atrocities there. In such a situation, it is possible that he may have taken such a step to create strategic pressure.
Explaining another reason for Iran’s attitude, Sandeep Singh says, ‘Inter-Arab conflict is also a reason for this. India’s relations with Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE have increased.
On the other hand, Iran and Turkey are in a different camp. It is possible that one reason may be that Iran has tried to prove itself a leader in the name of Islam and has also made comments about India.
Their attempt may be to send a message to Arab countries and especially Sunni Muslims about relations with India in the name of Islam. Iran wants to establish itself as the leader of not only a Shia country but the entire Muslim community.
