‘They asked us to accept Islam and we started believing them’, the real story of IC-814 hijacking…

The hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC 814 in 1999 is once again in the headlines.

Discussion on this issue has gained momentum due to the web series ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ released recently on Netflix.

The series has reignited debate on several issues, including the efforts made by the government and various agencies to handle the situation.

Pooja Kataria, who was held hostage in IC 814, has shared a lot of information. She has told how the terrorists behaved in the plane.

In an interview, Pooja has said that the hijacker of the plane was trying to convince her to convert to Islam. The day the plane was hijacked was Pooja Kataria’s birthday.

Pooja still has kept many things related to this incident with her, including a shawl on which the terrorists have written some good things for her and her husband.

Pooja told that one of the terrorists, a ‘doctor’, seemed to be very educated and used to talk nice things in the plane. He used to ask people to accept Islam and used to tell them that there are many shortcomings in your Hindu religion.

Some of us had even accepted their words, but when they started saying, ‘Your government is not listening to us. We will kill you’, we got scared.

Pooja said that after the hijacking, panic spread in the plane and a passenger had a heart attack. In such a situation, the terrorists were behaving well to calm the situation.

On the Hindu names of the terrorists, Pooja said that these were their own names, which they were using as code names to call each other in the plane.

Pooja told that the terrorists had also asked the passengers to donate money while talking about the poverty of Afghanistan. All of us passengers together had collected about 85 thousand rupees on their request and gave it to them to give to Afghanistan.
