New pictures of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, stuck in space since June, have created a stir across the world.
It is visible in the pictures that his weight has reduced a lot. Even the cheeks are sunken.
Now there is a panic situation even in NASA and an employee there has said that when he saw the picture he was shocked and that is what we were talking about.
NASA is now closely monitoring Sunita’s health. Sunita and Wilmore Butch had gone to the International Space Station for eight days in the first week of June, but due to a technical problem with the Boeing Starliner, both of them had to stay there for more than 150 days. Both the astronauts will be able to return to Earth only in February next year.
NASA scientists have taken notice of Sunita Williams’ deteriorating health. He told that Sunita Williams has lost a lot of weight and her cheeks have sunken.
“She is now reduced to just bones and skin,” said a NASA employee familiar with the situation. “His priority now is to stabilize his weight and hopefully this situation will change,” he said, according to the Post. The NASA employee further said, “I was shocked when I saw the last picture and it is something we are talking about. “This is a real concern and everyone is taking it seriously.”
Two hours of exercise is necessary every day
Let us tell you that Sunita started her space journey with a weight of about 140 pounds. But as the trip progressed, he struggled to meet the high calorie intake required to maintain his weight. “They need to eat about 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day to maintain their current weight, and when you start falling behind in calories, your weight drops rapidly,” the NASA employee said.
The employee further explained that the problem becomes worse because astronauts have to exercise for more than two hours every day to keep their muscles and bones strong in space, which burns extra calories.
NASA keeps a close eye on Sunita’s health
NASA doctors started paying attention to Sunita Williams’ weight a month before her pictures went viral.
Studies show that female astronauts in particular lose muscle mass at a faster rate than their male counterparts due to changes in metabolism during space travel.
A NASA spokesperson also said Williams was experiencing symptoms caused by the natural stress of living at high altitudes. He said that all NASA astronauts are regularly medically examined at the International Space Station.
He has a dedicated flight surgeon to monitor him and is in good health.
