The controversy that started after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the house of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and offered prayers during Ganesh Chaturthi is not dying down.
The Congress has targeted the Prime Minister over this visit and linked it to the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal reacted sharply to this and said that Prime Minister Modi is misusing religion in politics.
Venugopal said, “Everyone knows the difference between true devotion and misuse of religion in politics. As the elections approached, PM Modi decided to go to the CJI’s house for Ganesh Puja and took a camera crew with him.”
He raised the question that the Prime Minister should have thought about what message this visit would convey.
Congress says that the hidden motive behind this visit is to gain electoral advantage. Elections in Maharashtra are near and this move of PM Modi seems to be politically motivated.
Venugopal alleged that the Prime Minister was misusing Lord Ganesha to divert people’s attention from real issues.
He also accused the BJP and RSS of tampering with ‘institutional integrity’ and ‘constitutional values’. He said that this visit is a symbol of disrespect towards these institutions and this raises the question as to why the PM decided to visit the CJI’s house at this time.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit back at the Congress at a rally organised on the occasion of his 74th birthday in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He said that some people, who have had a problem with Ganesh Utsav, still want division in the society. Modi said that the Congress and its ‘ecosystem’ have a problem with his participation in Ganesh Puja.
The Prime Minister stressed that power-hungry people are having problems even with religious events like Ganesh Puja. He said that his government has always respected religion and culture and he will continue to participate in religious events.
On this occasion, the Prime Minister also launched Odisha’s ambitious ‘Subhadra Yojana’. Under this scheme, women of the state will be given financial assistance of Rs 10,000 annually, which will be distributed in two installments of Rs 5,000. In this entire incident, political rhetoric between Congress and BJP has gained momentum.
