Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) for eight days in June, have been stuck in space for eight months.

The US space agency NASA made a lot of efforts to bring Sunita Williams and Wilmore back, but due to technical fault, their return to Earth has been postponed till February 2025.

Currently, Sunita and Wilmore are staying with 9 other people in a 6-bed space center. A new update came from the ISS on Monday.

Sunita Williams has been appointed as the commander of the ISS. Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, who was handling this responsibility before her, is returning to Earth today along with two other astronauts.

Sunita Williams was given the responsibility of ISS at a time when the rescue operation for her and Wilmore is about to start soon.

This is the second time NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has been appointed commander of the International Space Station. She had earlier commanded it during Expedition 33 in 2012.

At 8 pm on Sunday night, astronaut Oleg Kononenko of the Russian space agency Roscosmos handed over this responsibility to Sunita.

Oleg and the three astronauts already living with him in the ISS are returning to Earth on Monday. Apart from Oleg, Tracy C Dyson and Nikolai Chub are returning to Earth.

NASA is trying to bring both of them back to Earth before February 2025. Despite being stranded in space, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore say that they are living very comfortably in the ISS.

In a video message released by NASA, Williams said, “This is my happy place. I love being in space.” Even before this, Sunita Williams has traveled to space on a tour of several days.

Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and 8 other astronauts are scheduled to return to Earth on Monday. They handed over the responsibility of commander to Sunita Williams before landing on Earth.

Now various operations and research activities will be carried out on the ISS under the supervision of Williams. Sunita Williams was given the responsibility of ISS at a time when the rescue operation for her and Wilmore is going to start soon.

NASA plans to send a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft to return Williams and Wilmore to Earth to ensure their safe return after the lengthy stay.
