Two American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun have been announced to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the year 2024.
Both these scientists discovered micro RNA. Scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun have won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation, the prize-giving body said on Monday.
Nobel laureates for medicine are selected by the Nobel Assembly of Karolinska Institutet Medical University, Sweden.
The winners are given a prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million) i.e. Rs 8.90 crore.
The Nobel Assembly said the two scientists have discovered microRNAs that are proving to be fundamentally important to the way organisms develop and function.
The statement said their discovery is important in understanding how organisms, including humans, develop and function. It is a small molecule that plays an important role in regulating gene activity.
A total of 227 winners in the medical field have been awarded the Nobel Prize so far, out of which only 13 women have received this award. The winner of this award is given 11 million Swedish krona (about 1 million US dollars). This award is given in the name of Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel.
The laureates are invited to receive the awards at a ceremony held on December 10, Nobel’s death anniversary.
