Amidst the war between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in America.
The Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reiterated India’s support for early restoration of peace and stability in the region.
Modi has arrived in the US on a three-day visit. He is in New York on the second leg of his visit. He met Abbas on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on Sunday.
“Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for early restoration of peace and stability in the region,” Modi wrote on the social media platform ‘X’.
Exchanged views on further strengthening longstanding friendship with the people of Palestine.’ External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on ‘X’, ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the President of Palestine His Excellency Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the UNGA today.’
Prime Minister Modi arrived in New York on Saturday after attending the summit of heads of government of the ‘Quad’ (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) group in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also held bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden.
Modi addressed thousands of Indian-American community at the ‘Modi and US’ event in Long Island on Sunday afternoon.
He also interacted with US technology giants and CEOs at a roundtable. Later in the day, he held bilateral talks with world leaders.
What solution did PM Modi put forward?
According to the Foreign Ministry statement, Prime Minister Modi has advocated resolving the dispute peacefully, releasing the hostages and finding a solution through dialogue and diplomacy.
Supporting the Two Nation Theory, he said that this is the only way to permanent peace in the region. Let us tell you that India was ahead among the countries that recognized Palestine.
PM Modi has also reiterated his support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations. Israel has been continuously attacking the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack on October 7 last year. So far, around 40 thousand people have been killed in Gaza.
