The Ukraine-Russia war that has been going on for the last two and a half years has now taken a more terrible form.
On one hand, Ukraine has carried out a drone attack similar to America’s 9/11 on the Volga Sky, the tallest building in Russia’s Saratov city, while on the other hand, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine with drones and missiles in the early hours of Monday and targeted many areas across Ukraine. This attack started around midnight and continued till morning.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, several groups of Russian drones were moving towards the eastern, northern, southern and central regions of Ukraine, after which several cruise and ballistic missiles were also fired. This is Russia’s biggest attack on Ukraine in the last few weeks.
Its target was Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. According to officials, explosions were heard in the capital Kiev and power supplies were disrupted in some areas of the city.
On the other hand, Ukraine has deployed the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) acquired from the US earlier this year, targeting several important Russian locations.
Satellite images have revealed that at least 250 Russian military and paramilitary bases are within the range of ATACMS. All these ballistic missile systems have long-range strike capability. Washington has made these systems available to Kiev this year but has strictly warned Ukraine that Ukraine can use them within its own geographical boundaries, including Crimea.
The US has categorically told Ukraine that these missiles will not be used inside the Russian mainland under any circumstances, but researchers claim that Ukraine has deployed the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) in such a way that 250 Russian locations are coming under its range. These locations include military bases, food granaries, communication centers and oil depots.
Researchers at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have published satellite imagery and a map showing that 250 Russian locations are still within range of ATACMS deployed by Ukraine.
The images show that these targets include major Russian military bases, communications stations, logistics centres, public utilities, fuel depots, ammunition depots and permanent headquarters.
However, a Politico report quoted a senior national security official in US President Joe Biden’s administration as saying that these ATACMS will not be as effective in targeting Russian bases as Kiev is hoping because Moscow has also deployed aircraft and anti-missile defense systems at Russian air bases close to the Ukrainian border.
“Of these 250 locations, only 17 are airfields and the remaining 233 are civilian facilities or associated locations,” the researchers wrote.
Therefore, Russia can deploy only at 17 airports or air force stations, while Ukraine can put pressure on Russia by attacking the remaining bases. However, this also seems far-fetched as America is not going to give permission for this at the moment.
