The Election Commission of Maldives informed on Sunday that ballot boxes in the parliamentary elections will be sent to three countries including India, that is, voting will take place outside Maldives also.

Actually, 11 thousand people of Maldives have requested for re-registration to move their polling stations.

Local media reports said the six-day period given to people to shift their polling stations for the April 21 elections ended on Saturday.

The Election Commission of Maldives said ballot boxes for the country’s elections will also be placed in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram, Sri Lanka’s Colombo and Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur as at least 150 people in each of the three countries re-register to vote. .

According to web portal ‘Adadhu.com’, Election Commission Secretary General Hassan Zakaria said, “Like before, many people have registered in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. 150 people have registered in Thiruvananthapuram, India, so we have decided to keep a ballot box there.

The Election Commission received 11,169 applications requesting re-registration at various polling stations during this period. According to the news portal ‘Edition.mv’, the commission rejected 1,141 forms, taking the total applications for registration to 10,028.

Noting that the number of people re-registering this year was lower compared to previous elections, Zakaria said voting would not take place in Britain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Thailand.

Parliamentary elections in Maldives were to be held on Sunday. However, the election date has still been postponed during the month of Ramadan. Parliamentary elections are now to be held on 21 April.

Pro-India party is contesting the elections on maximum number of seats.
According to ‘SundotMV’ news portal, a total of 389 candidates are contesting for 93 parliamentary seats in Maldives.

The largest number of candidates are from the main pro-India opposition party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – which is contesting on 90 seats.

This is followed by the ruling alliance of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC), which is contesting on 89 seats.

President Mohammad Muizzu, considered pro-China, came to power last year with an anti-India stance. He is associated with PNC.
