Once again in Iran, women have started taking to the streets against hijab.
Two years ago, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was killed in a brawl by the morality police. After which thousands of women had protested across the country.
This certainly infuriated the Iranian government but, despite all efforts, it could not suppress the movement.
On the second anniversary of Amini’s death, Iran’s new president vowed the government would ensure morality police do not harass women.
Reformist leader Masoud Pezeshkian took over as the new president in late July after the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash.
In his first press conference, he said, “The morality police should not take action against women. I will take action on this and ensure that they do not harass them.”
Masood’s remarks came on the second anniversary of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022.
Earlier on Sunday and Monday, women in Iran protested against the hijab on the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death. In many social media posts, women were seen taking off the hijab.

In 2022, a 22-year-old Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini was arrested for opposing the hijab. In Iran, the morality police takes action to deal with such allegations.
The job of the morality police is to ensure that Islamic laws are being followed properly in Iran. Amini was found guilty of not wearing a hijab in public and was tortured in police custody. This led to her death. After which there were massive protests in Iran for months.
Hundreds of people, including dozens of security personnel, were killed in violent demonstrations in support of Mahsa Amini and against the hijab. Thousands of protesters were arrested.
During the wave of protests that began following Amini’s death, the government had to impose strict restrictions on the internet, specifically blocking popular social media platforms such as Facebook and X.
However on Monday, Masood said his government was working to ease restrictions on social media.
