Kolkata. Bengal had two dark nights. The first one was filled with shame. The second one was filled with anger. The first night was the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in a medical college. The second night was the intervening night of 14-15 August when women from across the country took to the streets to protest against the incident. Working women from AIIMS, IIT, IIM, RML and many other big institutions took out candle marches and raised slogans. But, after the alleged goons started mingling in the protest and vandalising things, the police acted strictly due to which the atmosphere changed completely.
Women from all over the country took to the streets at 11:55 pm on 14 August. Not only women but also men took part in this protest, carrying placards and banners in their hands. Women on the streets were shouting slogans ‘For women’s freedom at the midnight of independence’.
Women participating in the protest in Kolkata and many other parts of the country kept demanding security for themselves and their daughters. It is being said that more such peaceful protests will be held in which other medical colleges including AIIMS in New Delhi can also be involved. Doctors say that the demands of the protest are strong and very clear, no security, no duty.
Police say that a group of about 40 people entered the hospital and damaged property. They pelted stones at policemen after which the policemen had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
