Why did Prime Minister Narendra Modi not meet Donald Trump or Kamala Harris during his US visit? This question is being raised vehemently.
In fact, voting for the next President in the US is to take place after about 5 weeks. In such a situation, India tried to stay away from the polarized political scenario of America.
It is worth noting that during an election rally in Michigan last week, Trump had said that Modi is coming to meet him next week.
He had described PM Modi as a ‘wonderful man’. However, India never confirmed any such meeting. Also, it was said that the schedule of the meeting was not fixed and kept changing.
Hindustan Times was told that it was clear from the beginning of the visit that PM Modi would either meet both the candidates or none of them.
Indian officials were wary of New Delhi’s image as a partisan figure in American politics. Overseas Indian officials also felt the same.
This was the reason why the organisers of PM Modi’s diaspora programme, unlike previous events, did not invite any elected American officials, including Indian-American representatives.
In 2019, Modi attended the Howdy Modi program in Houston with Trump. After this, Namaste Trump program was organized in Ahmedabad in 2020.
This created a perception among the Democrats that India was supporting Trump. New Delhi had to work hard to improve this image.
Trump and Harris busy in election campaign
Kamala Harris is an Indian-American. She enjoys a lot of support among the community. This must also have been on the minds of Indian officials.
In the Pravasi program, PM Modi mentioned the US election in the context of democratic elections held globally. Also, he linked it to the Indian election and his victory and responsibilities.
It is also worth noting here that the US is going to vote for the presidential election in a few days. In such a situation, both Trump and Harris are quite busy these days.
It is possible that due to his busy schedule it may have been difficult to organise a programme with Modi.
