The war between Russia and Ukraine has become fierce over the last three weeks.
Russia has been terrorizing Ukrainian cities since February 2022, but now Ukraine has also infiltrated Russia.
The Ukrainian Army has been occupying the Russian city of Kursk for three weeks and despite all efforts by Russia, Ukraine has not retreated from Kursk.
It is believed that Putin is not taking this threat seriously. However, this is the first time since the Second World War that the army of any country has captured a city in Russia.
The Ukrainian army has captured several kilometers of the city of Kursk. Thousands of Russians have fled the city due to the panic caused by Ukrainian fighters.
Experts who are closely monitoring the war between Russia and Ukraine say that Russia’s inability to liberate its city from Ukraine depends on Putin.
Putin and his army, who have thrown all their might into Ukraine, no longer have enough military and arms reserves to drive Kiev’s forces out of their territories.
Experts also say that Putin does not take the attacks on Ukraine’s Kursk region seriously. His priority is to completely occupy Ukraine. But why is this so?
What are Putin’s priorities?
Tatiana Stanovaya of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center believes, “Putin is focused on the collapse of Ukraine. That is why he is ignoring Ukrainian attacks on Russian cities.
Indeed, after launching the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin’s forces have successfully occupied the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson and their priority is to completely occupy Ukraine.
Putin announced in June that Kiev would have to agree to his terms before its troops could withdraw from those areas. However, Ukraine refused to accept these terms.
Ukraine attack in the eyes of Russia
Nigel Gould-Davis of the International Institute of Strategic Studies says, “The Russian government sees the Ukraine invasion differently. Putin believes that the Ukraine invasion is merely an attempt to get Russian forces back home.
Ukraine is doing this to distract Russia and force it to leave the occupied territories and weaken Russia in Ukraine. Russia believes it can control the threat on its soil without compromising its most important goals in Ukraine.”
It is noteworthy that on August 6, when Ukrainian forces entered the Russian city of Kursk, Russian troops continued their offensive around the Ukrainian parts of Pokrovsk and Donetsk.
Putin described the Ukrainian incursion at Kursk as an attempt by Kiev to slow down the Russian campaign in Donetsk. He said that despite the incidents of incursion in Kursk, Russia continues to succeed in Ukraine.
After seizing four Ukrainian regions, Putin has sought to downplay the offensive at Kursk.
