After the demise of veteran businessman Ratan Tata, Neera Radia, who was the public relations officer in his company, told for the first time why Ratan Tata wanted to launch Nano.
He told that it was his dream to launch Nano and he also fulfilled it, but he could not achieve this dream at the height he wanted. He wanted the dream of having a car for even the low earning people to be fulfilled.
Ratan Tata died on 9 October. He breathed his last at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. He was admitted to the hospital on October 7 due to age-related problems and high blood pressure.
Nira Radia handled public relations for the Tata Group between 2000 and 2012. He said that Ratan Tata, an industrialist and philanthropist, wanted to do something for the common man.
That’s why he dreamed of the Nano car. Nira Radia, former chairperson of the defunct company Vaishnavi Corporate Communications, said in an interview to NDTV that he loved his country and its people very much.
He used to say that globalization is very important. Ratan Tata used to say, “The only reason I see for being global is to bring technology to India.”
nano car dream
He told why Ratan Tata decided to make Nano? This has been repeated many times over the years.
“They wanted something for the common man,” he said. For example, they wanted no one riding a bike to get wet in the rain. A person’s dream of owning a car should not remain just a dream due to financial constraints.
When asked why Ratan Tata first chose Singur in West Bengal for the manufacturing of Nano? Radia said that she wanted to create jobs and industrialization in Bengal.
When they announced Singur for Nano’s plant, we were definitely surprised because we were not told about it earlier.
He was in favor of development and did not want politics. However, when the controversy over the Nano plant broke out in Bengal, the Tata group was negotiating the deal. There was a problem at the grassroots level in Singur, but the problem in Singur was not related to Nano or Ratan Tata.
Radia said, “Singur was the constituency of a leader of the then ruling party and it was a political fight. We visited several other states looking for space.
There were calls from Punjab, Karnataka and many other states, but we went to Gujarat because it was a little more industrialized and poised for development. So it was easy to set up a plant there.”
