In the US state of Louisiana, the government blew up the 22-story Hertz Tower by bombing it.
In just 15 seconds, this beautiful skyscraper turned into a five-storey pile of rubble. Efforts were being made to save this building for some years, but as soon as the building collapsed on Saturday, all the efforts to save it were in vain.
According to the report, the building had suffered extensive damage due to cyclone Laura that hit the city four years ago and was completely vacant since then.
On Saturday, the 22-story Hertz Tower, located on the banks of the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles city of Louisiana State, was blown up with a bomb.
The building was demolished in the presence of the city’s mayor Nick Hunter. This building was completely vacant for the last four years.
There was a dispute going on in the court between the building’s owners and the real estate firm Hertz Investment Group over the compensation amount for its demolition. After an agreement between the two parties, the court ordered the demolition of this building.
On Saturday, the team planted a bomb inside the building and blew it up. The Hertz Tower turned into a 5-story tall pile in just 15 seconds.
The building, formerly known as Capital One Tower, has been a major attraction in downtown Lake Charles for more than four decades, but the building was severely damaged by the 2020 storms that hit southwest Louisiana. Its windows were broken and covered with tarpaulins.
The legal battle over the building’s deal between the building’s owners and Los Angeles-based real estate firm Hertz Investment Group has been going on in court for the past four years, The Advocate reports.
The building’s owner was looking for $167 million. Eventually, a settlement was reached between the two parties. The amount of the settlement is not mentioned in the report.
Several attempts were made to save the building
Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter had a mixed reaction to the building’s explosion. Before the explosion, Hunter said, “I know the city worked very hard to save it, but ultimately… it’s too hard to do.”
“He was in the office when the cyclone hit in 2020. There was no other option but to demolish the building.”
