Why do you get stuck where you were born? Dalit judge’s pain and warning on socio-economic inequality…

Senior Supreme Court judge Justice B R Gavai on Friday lamented the fact that most of the wealth of the country is in the hands of a few people while the majority of the population is unable to arrange even two meals a day.

Reiterating the arguments and words uttered by the architect of the Constitution, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, in the final debate in the Constituent Assembly in November 1949, Justice Gavai said that the power of political equality given by adult franchise to all cannot blind and compel us to face inequalities in other spheres.

Justice Gavai, while emphasizing the need to remove the lack of economic and social mobility in the society, said that socio-economic inequality forces the citizens to remain trapped within the same boundaries and boundaries where they are born.

Dalit judge Justice Gavai has called upon people to come out of such restrictions and constraints.

According to the Bar and Bench report, Justice Gavai said, “Dr Ambedkar had said that at the political level we have achieved equality and justice by providing one person, one vote but what about economic and social justice and the inequality that exists? Our society is divided into narrow categories, where a person cannot travel from one compartment to another. At the economic level, we have a society where the entire wealth of the country is concentrated in a few hands, while it is difficult for the vast population to even have two meals a day. Therefore, he (Dr Ambedkar) warned us that we have to make every effort to eradicate these inequalities. If we do not do so, the building of democracy that has been built with so much hard work will collapse.”

In fact, Justice Gavai was addressing the program of Kerala High Court, in which the High Court has started many new initiatives.

The Kerala High Court today launched India’s first special digital court to deal with cheque dishonour cases and Kerala’s sixth special court to deal with cases under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Kerala Chief Minister P Vijayan was also present on this occasion. In his address, Vijayan reiterated the vision of the constitution makers in which Article 17 of the Constitution has made a legal provision to end untouchability in the country.

The Chief Minister also expressed the commitment of the Kerala Government towards the upliftment of all sections of the society.
