Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said on Monday that there is a need to apply a filter of national security to economic decisions, including investment decisions. He made this comment amid growing global concern over China’s aggressive trade style.
We need to apply national security filters
Addressing the CII Partnership Summit, 2024, Jaishankar said, “If we are not in the age of weaponization, we are in the age of rapid leverage.” Therefore, policy makers will have to apply national security filters to economic decisions, including investment. This trend is present all over the world and if we ignore it, it will be dangerous for us only.
Jaishankar said caution should be exercised in trade because the nature of commerce and supply chains in the world is such that traditional precautions are not always sufficient.
Deepened relationship with America
Regarding Trump 2.0, the Foreign Minister said that various countries have had their own experiences with the first Trump administration and they will take inspiration from the same experiences for the second term. As far as India is concerned, it can confidently say that its strategic cooperation with the US has only deepened with time. They have created a broader environment in which greater possibilities for cooperation can be explored.
