Bangalore. The Karnataka government is going to give a big gift to the women of the state. All the women working in government or private institutions here are going to start getting paid leave during periods. There is a provision of six days of paid period leave for women in a year. This will help them face the physical and mental challenges during menstruation. A committee of 18 members has been formed for this. This will create a balance between work and life of women.
Karnataka Labor Minister Santosh Lad said that these leaves will be flexible. Women will be able to decide when they want leave. He said that we are reviewing the proposal and have called a meeting with the members of the committee. The aim of this initiative is to support women employees. Women have to face significant physical and emotional ups and downs throughout their lives. Santosh Lad will meet the members of the committee and discuss the recommendations after which they will be put up for consultation with the public, companies and other parties. If this initiative comes into effect, Karnataka will become the fourth state to give period leave. Earlier this leave is given to women employees in Bihar, Kerala and Odisha. This policy was started in Bihar in 1992. In this, women were allowed two days of menstrual leave every month. At the same time, in 2023, Kerala made a provision for menstrual leave for female students in all universities and institutions as well as maternity leave of up to 60 days for female students above 18 years of age. The Odisha government had in August introduced a one-day menstrual leave policy for women workers in both government and private sectors.
