Women who are victims of atrocities should get immediate justice, learning of self-defense is also necessary; RSS on Kolkata incident…

The incident of rape and murder of a female doctor in West Bengal was condemned in the national coordination meeting of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

It was said that there is a need to reconsider laws and punitive actions to provide speedy justice to women who are victims of atrocities.

RSS All India Prachar Pramukh Sunil Ambekar termed the incident in West Bengal as extremely unfortunate and worrying.

Ambekar on Monday said self-defence skills must be imparted to girl students at school and college level as well as working women to empower them to protect themselves from such attacks.

Ambekar addressed a press conference after the conclusion of the three-day coordination meeting.

During this, he said that there is a need to review the laws and punitive actions to provide speedy justice to women who are victims of atrocities.

Responding to a question whether the provisions of the Indian Justice Code address the issue, Ambekar said the judicial process should be expedited instead of unnecessarily prolonging it.

He said that the incident of rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor in a Kolkata hospital was discussed in detail in the meeting.

‘Take these necessary steps for women’s safety’

Noting that such incidents are on the rise in the country, Sunil Ambekar said the role of the government, official machinery, laws, punishable actions and procedures were discussed in the meeting.

He said, ‘People who were present in the meeting believe that all this needs to be reconsidered so that we have due process, fast-track processes available and we can ensure justice for the victim.’

He said the meeting concluded that the issue can be resolved on 5 fronts- legal, public awareness, family values, education and self-defence skills.

Ambekar said such training was necessary at school and college level as well as for working women.

How much impact are TV and cinema having?

The meeting also found that constant exposure to content from various media platforms, including OTT platforms, TV and digital media, is leading to increasing incidents of violence against women.

He said, ‘It has been observed in many cases that people involved in such violent acts were watching such content for a long time.’ It is known that the body of a trainee doctor was recovered from the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August.

One person has been arrested in this case. A question related to the demand for imposition of President’s rule in West Bengal was also answered.

The RSS said the decision was for the government to take but added that this was not a very democratic way to destabilise the government.
