Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, while addressing a gathering of foreign diplomats on Sunday, accused former PM Sheikh Hasina of unleashing the biggest and worst civilian massacre after the 1971 genocide carried out by the Pakistan Army.
He said that Sheikh Hasina not only committed genocide but also destroyed all the institutions of Bangladesh.
Yunus described Hasina as a brutal dictator, saying she fled the country but security forces and her party’s student wing carried out the country’s worst civilian massacre since independence.
Hundreds of people were killed and thousands were injured, and the country was in many ways a mess when I took over as head of the interim government.
In its attempt to remain in power, Sheikh Hasina’s dictatorship destroyed every institution in the country. The judiciary was destroyed. Democratic rights were suppressed through a brutal crackdown of a decade and a half.
Yunus said the top priority of the interim government was to bring the law and order situation under control and the armed forces would assist civilians as long as needed.
And we also welcome the mission being sent by the United Nations to ensure accountability for the killings during the recent protests. Yunus was speaking at a gathering attended by India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma.
Seeking help from the global community, Yunus said that to transform Bangladesh into a genuine and thriving democracy, we need to make meaningful and deep reforms for which we will need the support of the entire international community.
Also talked about the upcoming elections in Bangladesh
Elections were held in Bangladesh earlier this year, in which Sheikh Hasina’s party won a one-sided victory. After Hasina’s resignation, the parliament has been dissolved.
Talking about the elections, Yunus said that Hasina openly rigged the elections, there are many youth who have never exercised their voting rights.
Because they were not allowed to do so. Banks were looted with full political protection and the state treasury was plundered by abusing power.
Speaking about the upcoming elections, Yunus said that as soon as we complete important reforms in our election commission, judiciary, civil administration, security forces and media, we will hold a free, fair, participatory election. We will make serious efforts to maintain unity in the country.
