Dhaka. Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin is under attack from all sides for supporting Sheikh Hasina. After the students’ protest, now Mohammad Yunus government has prepared to remove him from the post. For this the government is consulting all parties. According to media reports, the interim cabinet may discuss the issue this week. “We will keep you informed of any developments related to this matter,” Shafiqul told reporters after a meeting between Chief Advisor Yunus and a delegation of Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party at the state guest house in Jamuna on Wednesday. Following an infiltration attempt at Rashtrapati Bhavan late last night and violent clashes with police, authorities have stepped up security to prevent further such incidents. Shafiqul said, we have increased the security of Bangabhaban. In a separate conversation with reporters, Information Adviser Naheed Islam said any decision regarding President Shahabuddin could be taken through political consensus and national unity rather than following legal or constitutional processes.
Protestors tried to storm the President’s residence
Authorities have beefed up security around the President’s residence in the wake of protests demanding the removal of President Shahabuddin over his remarks questioning Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. On Tuesday, hundreds of protesters tried to storm Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President, and demanded Shahabuddin’s resignation. Shahabuddin had last week said he had no documentary evidence that Sheikh Hasina had resigned as prime minister before fleeing the country amid massive student-led protests in August. If sources are to be believed, the interim government is consulting all the stakeholders and a decision can be taken in this regard after discussion. Whether the President continues in office or not is not a legal or constitutional question at present. This is a political decision. We are giving priority to stability, security and discipline in the state while taking decisions.
